Liverpool City Council
Background:
Liverpool, the sub regional capital of Merseyside, is the sixth largest
city in the United Kingdom and has a population of 442,500. Situated
in the north west of England, it has excellent road and rail connections,
along with rapid trans-global sea routes and two international airports
within easy reach of the city centre
Established in 1207 the city rose to
prominence during the 18th and 19th Centuries as one of the great port
cities, and today
it’s
famous waterfront is recognised across the world. The wealth of the city
was badly affected by the world depression of the 1930s and hit again
in the 1960s and 1970s by severe downturn of both port and manufacturing
activities. Since the mid 1990s Liverpool has seen a gradual reversal
of fortune which in recent times has accelerated and the city is now
in the middle of a remarkable economic transformation.
Liverpool has recently been designated
as European Capital of Culture for 2008, and in 2004 the city’s
historic waterfront was formally recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage
Site. These two
accolades, along
with comprehensive redevelopment of the city centre and waterfront, have
added new impetus to the economic recovery.
We place great value in our relationship with Europe. The vision of
Liverpool City Council is that Liverpool will be a premier European city
and we recognise not only the funding contribution that the EU can (and
has) made to this, but also the knowledge and good practice that we can
learn from and share with other cities in Europe.
